A plea to media automation devs

STOP MAKING *ARRS

Let's be totally clear: the selfhosting community is incredible. Hundreds of people have poured their hearts and countless hours into tools for cordcutters, archivists, and enthusiasts of all stripes, overwhelmingly open-sourced.

It's the internet at its best: a distributed army of hobbyists creating real, tangible alternatives to the enshittification and surveillance marching its way down our digital throats.

There's just one small thing I'd change, if I could.

DEAR GOD, STOP CALLING EVERYTHING *ARR

And *rr. And *err.

It was cute at first. Arrrr! It's fun and distinctive! And most of the early projects were forked from each other, anyway, and largely run by the same people.

Then it picked up steam, and why not jump aboard? Now everyone knows intuitively what ecosystem your project belongs to, and sometimes even exactly what it does.

But friends, we've lost the plot. We've entered an era of abundance, with niches often served by multiple tools, and each new project now has to clamber for an untaken noun that's both *arr-able and kinda sorta relates to its function.

We're starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel. I know you know what I'm talking about.

This is a call-in, not a callout. If you vibecoded a tool yesterday that helps weasel aficionados manage their collection of weasel videos and you called it Weaselarr, I still love you.

We just have to put our foot down someday. And today is that day.
